Creating 3D geometry
The base of CFD simulation is 3D geometry, so when building the shape, it is essential to keep in mind to ensure an optimal balance between elaboration and the projected number of cells. This is what influences accuracy and time needed for calculations the most.
We often receive 3D geometry from customers, in various file formats. We are able to integrate any file type from the most common CAD software without a problem, but the import of transitory file types are also integrated well. These 3D models are often subject to minor modifications, (that we check with the Customer) in order to optimise it for simulation purposes. We also provide our skills to build up the geometry from 2D drawings in a short time. Duration of the preparation, or building, of the geometry takes from one day to one week depending on the complexity.
Mesh generation and modelling physics
3D geometry has to be divided into elementary volumes to enable the software to calculate the equation system applicable to the fluid. The choice of the adequate meshing model is indispensable to ensure accurate results. In comparison to its concurrence, ANSYS provides prominently a large palette of meshing tools, adapted to the various physics and modelling requirements.
After the mesh generation, initial conditions are determined, which means the choice of physics parameters, the turbulence model and material properties. If necessary, UDF (User Defined Function) can also be determined to comply with special requirements. Depending on the complexity, the calculation-ready model is established in 3-8 days.
Solving and convergence
Before running the calculations, convergence criteria have to be defined and their parameters have to be monitored during the solving process. Our multicore processors and expanded server network benefit from the advantages of ANSYS HPC, speeding up the calculation process by reducing the duration to 1-2 days.
During the calculation, and at the end of the process, in every case, the convergence criteria are checked and some parameters are changed if necessary in order to allow the required accuracy. Only the perfectly trustable results will be presented to the Customer.
Evaluation of results and report
Results are presented in the form of images, animations and movable 3D models and, by using these elements, an illustrated and scientific analysis-based written report is provided to the Customer.
Depending on the aim of the project, the task can vary from design criteria verification to bounded optimisation process. In the case of design criteria verification, the report declares directly if the requirements about conception, constituted previously by the Customer, are achieved or not. In the case of the optimisation process, we show the first converged model’s results to the Customer and make clear suggestions for the concept, then, with the Customer, we define the parameter modifications together in order to achieve the objective. We continue the optimisation process following the formerly constituted workflow until the results meet the requirements.
